AT THE DAWN OF HISTORY

At some point in Prehistory Basque language or Euskara emerged and developed. Although the exact origin of the language is still unknown, we do know that since then it is based in the Basque Country and that it has no known relatives or fellow travellers in the field of comparative linguistics.

The Basque language is a pre-Indo-European language. Settled in this part of Europe since remote times, the Basques coexisted and interacted with different peoples and cultures before entering History.

Perhaps, as suggested by the linguist Koldo Mitxelena, the true enigma of Basque is not its origin but how it has managed to survive up to now.
